Best Dash Cams for the Honda CR-V (2017–2027)

Short answer: if you want a dash cam that looks like Honda installed it, get the FitCamX built for your CR-V's generation — the 6th-gen unit for 2023–2027 (from $168) or the 5th-gen unit for 2017–2022 (from $189). Both replace the plastic cover behind your rearview mirror, record 4K, and keep every wire out of sight. Unlike the RAV4, the CR-V split is clean: your model year tells you which one to buy. Below: how the two compare, which configuration to choose, and the install and CarPlay caveats owners report.

Our verdict · Best Overall for the CR-V
8.5
/ 10 SCORE

For a 2023–2027 CR-V, the FitCamX 6th-gen unit is the pick: a mirror-cover camera molded for this body, 4K front recording through an f/1.6 lens, WiFi clip downloads to your phone, and the lowest price of the two CR-V fitments. The 4K front-only version at $168 is the best value — no cable run, full resolution on the angle that reads plates. Owners of a 2017–2022 CR-V get the same camera in the 5th-gen housing, from $189.

Both listings are for left-hand-drive vehicles only — that's every CR-V sold new in the US and Canada. FitCamX sells separate right-hand-drive versions for other markets; make sure you're on the listing linked here.

How to Make Sure You Order the Right One

Step 1 — Go by model year

Honda switched to the 6th-generation CR-V for the 2023 model year, and FitCamX's two listings follow that line exactly: 2017–2022 is 5th gen, 2023–2027 is 6th gen. There's no overlap year to puzzle over. Your model year is on your registration and on the label inside the driver's door jamb.

Step 2 — Pick a housing color (6th gen only)

The 6th-gen unit comes in Black or Grey. Choose the one that matches the plastic around your rearview mirror — you'll send FitCamX a photo of it anyway (next step), so if you're unsure, mention it in that email.

Step 3 — Send the mirror photo when FitCamX asks

These cameras are matched to your car, so FitCamX emails you after purchase to confirm your model and mirror cover and asks for a photo. They ship within 3 days of that confirmation. Their listing is blunt about skipping it: no photo can mean a delayed shipment or a model that doesn't fit. Reply promptly, or contact them before ordering if you want fitment confirmed up front.

The Two CR-V Fitments

Both run the same FitCamX camera platform, so they share the 8.5 score we gave FitCamX in our main dash cam roundup. Our evaluation is based on FitCamX's published specifications and policies, the 63 customer reviews across the two CR-V listings (46 + 17), and comparison against the universal-mount cameras in our main guide. We have not personally installed a CR-V unit.

The current-generation CR-V gets the cheaper of the two fitments and the larger owner base — 46 reviews averaging 4.83 stars. The camera replaces the cover behind your mirror with a housing shaped like the original, so it reads as factory equipment instead of a gadget hanging off the glass. Inside: a Novatek chip and f/1.6 aperture recording 2160p at 30fps, a G-sensor that locks footage when it detects a collision, and WiFi to the FitCamX app (iOS and Android) for pulling clips to your phone without mobile data.

Power comes from the overhead console panel above the mirror rather than your 12V socket, so nothing runs down the A-pillar. Owners describe the front install as manageable but not effortless: one calls unclipping the mirror surround "a bit fiddly," and another had it done at Best Buy after a first attempt at home didn't work out. Owners who added the rear camera say hiding its cable took the most time. One real-world caveat worth knowing before you buy: an owner with wireless CarPlay reported having to disconnect CarPlay to view clips in the app, since the app reaches the camera over its WiFi.

Pros

  • Housing molded for the 6th-gen CR-V — factory look, no visible wires
  • Lowest price of the two CR-V fitments ($168 for 4K front)
  • Two housing colors to match your mirror surround
  • Largest owner base: 46 reviews, 4.83★ average

Cons

  • Removing the mirror surround is fiddly; some owners use an installer
  • Viewing clips in the app may require disconnecting wireless CarPlay
  • Parking mode needs a separate hardwired install

If your CR-V is a 2017–2022, this is your fitment — and the camera inside is the same 4K Novatek platform as the newer unit, so there's no "older car" downgrade. It costs $21 more than the 6th-gen version at every configuration. The review count is smaller (17), but the rating is the highest of the two at 4.88 stars, and the owner reports are specific: one installed both front and rear cameras in about an hour with the included pry tool and a #2 Phillips screwdriver; an owner of a 2018 CR-V Touring said it looks like factory equipment.

The same overhead-console power source applies, and the rear camera plugs into the front unit rather than needing its own power. The one install complaint that comes up: an owner wished FitCamX's installation video explained the Y-cable connection more clearly. If you've never pulled interior trim, watch the video before you start and budget time for the rear cable.

Pros

  • Same 4K camera platform as the newest CR-V fitment
  • Highest owner rating of the two (4.88★, 17 reviews)
  • Owners report roughly one hour for a front + rear install

Cons

  • $21 more than the 6th-gen unit at every configuration
  • Install video could explain the Y-cable more clearly
  • Smaller review base than the 6th-gen listing

Choosing Your Configuration

The three options, and who each is for

Both CR-V fitments offer the same three configurations. 4K front-only ($168 for 6th gen, $189 for 5th gen, 64GB card) is the simplest install and the one most owners should start with. 1440p front + 1080p rear ($198 / $219, 64GB) adds rear coverage but lowers front resolution. 4K front + 1080p rear ($248 / $269) keeps full front resolution, adds the rear camera, and doubles the included card to 128GB.

Our read: if you want a rear camera, pay the extra $50 for the 4K dual. Front resolution is what reads plates in a dispute, and the 2K dual gives it up to gain the rear view.

Parking mode needs a hardwired install

FitCamX's parking mode triggers on impact rather than recording continuously, and their listing states it requires a hardwired installation. If protection while parked is your main reason for buying, plan for that wiring on top of the camera price.

Shipping takes weeks, not days

After the photo confirmation, FitCamX ships within 3 days, and standard shipping is quoted at 8–12 working days. Plan on two to three weeks from order to install. One buyer also warned about a phishing text impersonating the courier and asking for customs fees — FitCamX's standard shipping included taxes for them, so treat any such message with suspicion.

The warranty is 12 months

FitCamX's policy covers manufacturing defects for 12 months from purchase, with a free replacement and return shipping paid by FitCamX. After that, repairs are at your cost, and the warranty ends if you sell or transfer the camera. That's shorter than some universal-mount brands — the tradeoff for the factory-integrated look.

Shopping between a CR-V and a RAV4?

FitCamX makes OEM-fit units for both, but the RAV4 is the harder fit — it uses three different mirror covers, including overlapping years. If you're deciding between the two SUVs or own both, our RAV4 fit guide walks through that identification step.

What if you'd rather not remove any trim?

If prying off the mirror surround sounds like more project than you want, a universal-mount camera skips fitment entirely — you trade the factory look for a camera that fits any car and moves with you. Our main dash cam guide covers the strongest universal options, including mirror-mounted and budget 4K picks.

Honda CR-V Dash Cam FAQ

Which FitCamX fits my CR-V?
Go by model year: 2017–2022 CR-Vs take the 5th-gen unit, and 2023–2027 CR-Vs take the 6th-gen unit. Both are for left-hand-drive vehicles, which covers every CR-V sold new in the US and Canada.
Does it work on the CR-V Hybrid?
FitCamX's 6th-gen listing doesn't exclude hybrid trims, and an owner review on that listing is from a 2025 CR-V Sport Hybrid. Because FitCamX confirms every order with a photo of your mirror cover before shipping, any trim-specific difference would be caught at that step.
Will it work with my wireless CarPlay?
The camera records regardless, but one owner reported having to disconnect wireless CarPlay to view clips in the FitCamX app, because the phone connects to the camera over WiFi. Plan to download or review footage when you're parked and not using CarPlay.
Can I install it myself?
Many owners do. One installed front and rear cameras in about an hour using the included pry tool and a #2 Phillips screwdriver. Others found unclipping the mirror surround fiddly, and at least one had it installed at Best Buy. The front camera takes power from the overhead console, so there's no fuse-box work unless you want parking mode.
Does it record while the car is parked?
Only with a hardwired installation. FitCamX's parking mode starts recording when it detects a collision rather than recording continuously, and their listing states it requires hardwiring.
How long does shipping take?
FitCamX emails you after purchase to confirm your model with a photo of your mirror cover, ships within 3 days of confirmation, and quotes 8–12 working days for standard shipping. Expect roughly two to three weeks in total.
What warranty does FitCamX offer?
12 months from purchase for manufacturing defects, with a free replacement and FitCamX paying the freight. The warranty ends if you sell or transfer the product.

Final Verdict

The bottom line · Pick your generation, then your resolution

The CR-V is one of the easiest cars to buy an OEM-fit dash cam for: your model year picks the housing, and the camera inside is the same either way. 2023–2027 owners should get the 6th-gen FitCamX — $168 for 4K front-only is the best value, or $248 for 4K front + rear if you want the back covered and are ready for the cable run. 2017–2022 owners get the same choice in the 5th-gen housing at $189 or $269.

Know the tradeoffs going in: a fiddly mirror-surround removal, a 12-month warranty, two to three weeks of shipping, and — if you use wireless CarPlay — disconnecting it to review clips. If those are fine, nothing else looks this factory-installed in a CR-V.
